Freifrau: The German Manufaktur That Builds Every Chair by Hand

The name Freifrau translates from German as "free woman". It is not incidental. Every chair in the range carries a female forename: Amelie, Leya, Nana, Stella, Celine, Ona. The names are not marketing language. They reflect how the brand thinks about its furniture: each design has a distinct character, a personality that should be recognisable across every configuration it can take. This is one of the more unusual and consistent design philosophies in European furniture, and it is one of the reasons the brand has spent over a decade building a following among architects, interior designers, and private clients who want seating that holds its quality long after the initial excitement of a new interior has settled.

Freifrau is based in Lemgo, a small town in Westphalia, Germany. Everything is made there, or within a close network of regional suppliers, some within fifty kilometres of the factory. Every piece is handcrafted, every upholstery job checked by hand before dispatch. A Brand Built from One Decision

Hansjörg Helweg was a trained carpenter when he registered Frei Frau GmbH in September 2011. He had a clear picture of what European seating furniture should look like, and he decided to make it rather than continue working for someone else. The first year of production happened in the hall of a friendly exhibition contractor, with one office employee and an annual output of around 1,000 units.

Names That Belong to People

Amelie arrived first. Designed by Birgit Hoffmann and Christoph Kahleyss, who have acted as Freifrau's creative direction since the founding, Amelie set the template: an upholstered shell available in fabrics or leather, with a choice of frame materials and finishes, piping that outlines the form and gives the design its precision. The seat back and seat can be covered in different materials for a two-tone result. The result is a chair that looks different in almost every room it enters, without ever losing its identity.

Stella came later, designed by the Hanoverian Patrick Frey. It is a chair with curved oak arms and backrests, a filigree base that crosses at the centre, and an ergonomically shaped seat. Where Amelie is upholstery-led, Stella is structure-led. The oak curves are the design; the upholstery works in service of them. The Designers Behind the Chairs

Hoffmann Kahleyss have shaped the brand's creative direction from day one, but Freifrau has always worked with external designers too. The brief given to each one is consistent: the design must have the potential to become a family. A single chair is not enough. Every piece must be able to grow into chairs, armchairs, benches, barstools, and in some cases outdoor variants.

A Range That Grows Like a Family

Leya was the second Freifrau line, and it became the collection's first real milestone. What started as a single armchair developed into a full family: chairs, armchairs, benches, barstools, rocking chairs, swinging chairs. The Leya family gave Freifrau its blueprint for how a product range should work. No design stands alone in the catalogue. Every piece is conceived with the potential for siblings.

Leyasol is Leya's outdoor counterpart. A filigree, weather-resistant wire frame replaces the indoor structure while retaining the shell shape. The removable cushions are available in indoor and outdoor fabrics. Without cushions, Leyasol reads as a sculptural metal object. With them, it becomes the same comfortable piece you would expect from the indoor version. The Nana Armchair

Hanne Willmann's Nana armchair was introduced in 2021 and represents the brand's most voluminous piece of seating. Willmann describes it as a homage to the art of upholstery. The design is soft and generous, but it is not heavy or shapeless. The outline is clear: a defined back edge, a seat that tapers forward, arms that wrap without closing off the silhouette. The upholstery is thick throughout, which is why the chair looks substantial, but the proportions are calibrated so that it reads as elegant rather than oversized.

Nana is available as a chair, an armchair, a love seat, and a couch lounge. In 2023, Freifrau also launched the MIA modular sofa, adding a configurable system that allows clients to build seating arrangements suited to a specific floor plan rather than a standard format. The Freifrau sofa collection includes both Nana formats and the MIA system.

Made to Order, Made for You

Every Freifrau piece is made to order. Each chair is produced on the basis of the client's fabric choice, frame finish, and configuration. The options are broad enough to make nearly every piece unique, and specific enough to be specified with confidence.

Junker, the upholsterer, has worked with Freifrau since 2013 and operates regionally within fifty kilometres of the factory. This proximity means quality checks happen on the actual fabric, not just on swatches. How Freifrau Makes Each Piece

The factory checks every piece by hand before dispatch. There is no end-of-line sampling; every individual item passes through a physical quality review. A piece of furniture is a long-lived object, and the quality at dispatch determines the quality in use for years afterward.
